Mather graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Oberlin, then followed her Army husband to Louisiana, Kansas, Virginia, Kentucky, and occupied Germany. She has done substitute teaching of grades one through twelve and has mowed and baled hay as well as put up enough food for her nine children.
