Mary E Daubenspeck, retired Corporate Communications Director, professional freelance writer and preservationist, had published several books and articles prior to her death from cancer in 2001. Mary was the private owner of the Nauset Light Keeper's House and Oil house from 1982 until the time at which she donated them to the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1999, for the sole purpose of keeping the Nauset Light Station intact - i.e. the Lighthouse, the Keeper's House and the Oil House - for the people of Cape Cod, and for posterity. Mary's first book "NAUSET LIGHT: A Personal History" (1995) describes her life in the context of the history of Nauset Light and her sense of personal responsibility of private ownership of the Keeper's House. Mary's courage and conviction that the Keeper's House and Oil House should never be separated from the Lighthouse led her to selflessly and charitably gift her cherished seaside home to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Mary believed that we each are accountable to something "greater than ourselves" and actively lived out this belief with her Keeper's House and Oil House preservation activity. See less
