ERSKINE PETERS is Professor of English and African-American Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His current areas of specialization are Afro-poetics in the United States and philosopical concerns in early Afro-American writing. His books include William Faulkner: The Yoknapatawpha World and Black Being , African Openings to the Tree of Life , and Fundamentals of Essay Writing .
