Dimitra J. Smith is a Professor in the Department of Higher Education and Learning Technologies at Texas A&M University - Commerce. Her research focuses on the education, preparation, and career exploration experiences of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), with a particular emphasis on community college students and students at minority-serving institutions. Her research agenda consists of three distinct, yet interrelated strands: (a) Student success in STEM fields, (b) Educational pathways among traditionally underrepresented and underserved students, and (c) The role of community colleges and minority-serving institutions in student success. Dr. Dimitra J. Smith is a sought after speaker for her experience and expertise in leadership, career fulfilment, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) education, preparation, and career exploration. Dr. Smith has presented at over 60 regional, national, and international conferences, meetings and events. She has written and published in major peer-reviewed journals. Her research can be found in the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability, National Journal of Urban Education and Practice, and Student Affairs on Campus, to name a few. She has also co-edited several books focused on The future of Black Leadership in Higher Education, Community Colleges and Workforce Preparation in the 21st Century, The Future of Community Colleges and Hispanic Leadership in Higher Education. As a children's book author, Dr. Smith has written a number of books focused on educating children on STEAM related careers and opportunities. Dr. Smith also has an interest in the role of mental health, and substance abuse on the higher education population. Dr. Dimitra J. Smith graduated from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with a Psychology undergraduate degree. She earned her Master's Degree at Iowa State University in Educational Leadership and Policy, with an Emphasis in Higher Education/Student Affairs. She also earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration and Community College Leadership from Iowa State University. See less
