C.L.R. James (1901-1989) was a Trinidadian cultural critic and scholar who helped to define and popularize the autonomist Marxist tradition in the United States and Canada. He is the author of numerous works of anti-colonial and political theory, including Facing Reality; Mariners, Renegades & Castaways; State Capitalism and World Revolution; and Black Jacobins.
