Dr. Aubrey H. Fine is a well-known motivational speaker and workshop trainer, specializing in the fields of education, mental health and health care. He has been recognized by various organizations for his work with children, animals and the community, including the Wang Family Excellence Award for Distinguished Professor in California State, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and the 2006 Cal Poly Faculty Award for Community Engagement. A native of Montreal, Canada, Dr. Fine received his Master of Education degree from the University of South Alabama in 1978, with an emphasis on Therapeutic Recreation. He received his graduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1982 in Psychology. Dr. Fine has been on the faculty of California State Polytechnic University since 1981, where he is currently a professor in the College of Education and Integrative Studies. His interest in the human-animal bond and animal therapy began after opening Children's Diagnostic Services in Claremont, CA, in 1987. He was frequently accompanied by some of his pets at the office, where the children who were his patients were able to interact with them. While he was working with his patients he noted how they began to open up more readily when an animal was there. Now a noted advocate of Animal Assisted Therapy, Dr. Fine has studied this field for over three decades with children as well as the elderly, and strongly integrates AAT into his clinical practice. Dr. Fine serves on numerous editorial review boards, including the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (Formerly Journal of Mental Retardation), Journal of Human Animal Interaction, and was a guest reviewer for Anthrozoos, A Multidisciplinary Journal of the Interactions of People and Animals and Society and Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies. He has also published several books in the fields of animal therapy, children and sport psychology. Perhaps his best known works are The Handbook on animal assisted therapy and interventions: Guidelines for Practice, now in its third edition, and Afternoons with Puppy: Inspirations from a Therapist and his Animals. He has a regular monthly column, the "Loving Bond" in Dog Fancy and has been a guest on numerous national TV and radio shows, including ABC, Animal Planet, and CNN. See less
