Alexander Mehlmann was born in Romania in 1949. After emigrating to Austria at the age of 13, he studied mathematics at Vienna's University of Technology. Following graduation, he worked for the next 42 years teaching and researching at his alma mater. A now retired associate professor, he ist still lecturing on "Game Theoretic Modeling" and on "Mathematics and Literature", aiming to guide students towards refreshing mathematical thoughts by means of a "tongue-in-cheek" route to the legend of Faust, as well as to some game theoretical facets of Greek mythology. By using apocryphal stories, short and long poems, as well as mathematical arguments, his lectures generate an intriguing look at literature through the lens of mathematics, bringing the mathematics into poetical focus at the same time.
