This book and it's sequel Under Wellington's Command provide a good overview of the Peninsular War. It tells about the different campaigns but, unlike most Henty books does not tell the reasons behind it. The story is about Terrence O'Connor, son of a captain in the regiment of the Mayo Fusiliers. He is made an ensign and is with the army in Portugal. He fights at the battle of Corunna, where he is separated from the British army. He afterward has many adventures and becomes the leader of a Portugese regiment.
