Very good. 326, [4] pages. George Warrington "G. W." Steevens (10 December 1869-15 January 1900)[1] was a British journalist and writer. He was the most famous war correspondent of his time, before being eclipsed by the daring escape of young Churchill from a Pretoria prison. Steevens utilized the articles which appeared in these and other publications in various books, such as Monologues of the Dead (1895), The Land of the Dollar (America) (1897), With the Conquering Turk (1897), With Kitchener to Khartum, chronicling his attachment to British forces during the Mahdist War in the Sudan, The Tragedy of Dreyfus and his posthumous From Cape Town to Ladysmith. He is also the author of In India, a series of articles on India published in 1899. He was appointed by the Daily Mail as war correspondent to South Africa during the Second Boer War in 1899. He died of enteric fever (commonly known as typhoid) on 15 January 1900, six weeks before the Natal Field Army of Redvers Buller relieved Ladysmith. The Mahdist War (ath-Thawra al-Mahd; 1881-99) was a war of the late 19th century between the Mahdist Sudanese of the religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah, who had proclaimed himself the "Mahdi" of Islam (the "Guided One"), and the forces of the Khedivate of Egypt, initially, and later the forces of Britain. In 1898, the British decided to reassert Egypt's claim on Sudan. An expedition commanded by Kitchener was organized in Egypt. It was composed of 8, 200 British soldiers and 17, 600 Egyptian and Sudanese soldiers commanded by British officers. The Mahdist forces numbered more than 60, 000 warriors, but lacked modern weapons. After defeating a Mahdist force in the Battle of Atbara in April 1898, the Anglo-Egyptians reached Omdurman, the Mahdist capital. The bulk of the Mahdist army attacked, but was cut down by British fire. The remnant, with the Khalifa Abdullah, fled south Sudan. They caught Abdullah at Umm Diwaykarat, where he was killed, ending the Mahdist regime.
