While I wasn't in love necessarily with the narrative structure of the book (I would have preferred something more linear), it was probably the best researched bio I've ever read. I really think that the backlash was more related to the brutal honesty of the story than anything else. It was an ugly situation, and this was a no-holds-barred telling of Belushi's life. A truly fascinating book.

Compelling
Having grown up while watching John Belushi perform on SNL, I decided to read this book. Detailed and giving amazing insight to Belushi, the book pieces together the memories of those who knew him and really shows the actor's true personality and experiences up until his death.
Unfortunately, the book was a bit hard to get through at times because it had no solid timeline and tended to flit around. The amount of people within the book itself also tends to bog down the biography, sometimes to the point that I had to stop and try to remember who the person was and how they knew Belushi.
The book should not be missed, however, as it fills in gaps of his life that help explain the funny man as much as possible without his own imput. Instead of showing someone who was a star who simply passed away, it shows a human being for all their flaws and merits, defining Belushi as best as it could.
