This book has an interesting history of the culture of microbe hunting in our microbiological sciences, and how it's misled us. The first several chapters give histories of diseases caused by diet or drugs that were incorrectly attributed to microbes. The authors (both virologists) then came to the conclusion that the HIV-AIDS connection was drawn in error and needs to be reinterpreted, and showed how this could happen, the fallout of such an incorrect conclusion, why it has not been corrected, and the damage it is causing. Regardless of whether you agree with the authors on AIDS, they demonstrate admirable thinking processes for true scientists (of which I am one), and give interesting, memorable facts along the way.
