One of the set's most persuasive selling points is the incisive and nuanced conducting of Woldemar Nelsson. Nelsson made only few recordings, primarily of Bayreuth productions, but his command of the score shows him to be an assured Wagnerian. He's especially effective in conveying the score's tumultuous, stormy volatility, with appropriately flexible tempos and dynamics. Simon Estes is commanding in the title role; his voice is dark and deep, with both the vulnerability and incisiveness necessary for the role. Matti Salminen's Daland is similarly impressive, richly resonant, and expressive. Robert Schunk is especially effective as Erik, singing with ringing brightness and passion; his performance leaves the listener wondering why he did not have a more successful international career.
