This release by conductor Marin Alsop and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, however, is the first to take up Lee's large-scale orchestral works and also apparently the first recording of his music made in Europe. Thus those who have encountered Lee on symphonic programs might well turn to this release to investigate him further. Three of the four works have or involve biblical themes with Hebrew titles; although a speaker of Hebrew, Lee was inspired not by Judaism but by his Seventh-Day Adventist faith. He studied at the University of Michigan, and influences from his teachers there, including Michael Daugherty and William Bolcom, are present but not dominant. African-American themes and musical materials are most evident in the final Chuphshah!: Harriet's Drive to Canaan, evoking episodes in the life of Harriet Tubman.
