With this set of concertos by Vivaldi, Leclair, and Locatelli, he is coming off his anointing-by-collaboration on a duet album with the giant of French Baroque music, William Christie, and he emerges with a powerfully individual style. Langlois de Swarte's playing inhabits the public, violin-virtuoso realm from which this music emerged. He offers improvised or quasi-improvised preludes, stirs up excitement by varying the tempo, and cultivates a brilliant tone on his 1665 Stainer violin and Tourte bow. His accompanying ensemble, Les Ombres, has a gutsy sound (literally and figuratively) with 12 strings and a large continuo.
