This work is not often played, and still rarer is the Cello Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 8, written in 1884 while Herbert was still in Germany. The second concerto is the more tightly constructed work, but lovers of Herbert's musicals (true, a rarer breed than formerly) may prefer the first one: sample the first movement (track one) and go about five minutes in to the second subject, and you'll quickly learn why Herbert decided to try his hand at writing musicals: he had a considerable gift for lyrical light melody.
