Excerpt from Vernacular Architecture in the Eastern United States: An Exhibition of Measured Drawings From the Historic American Building Survey The measured drawings on exhibition are examples of the work of the Historic American Buildings Survey. This was one of the many projec s initiated during the Depression of the nineteen-thirties to make use of talents temporarily unem ployed. After a lapse during the Second world War the survey has now been re-established. The lational Parks Service carries out a certain amount of investigation in the field, while the Smithsonian Institution, another organ of the Federal Government carries out research through the Division of Cultural History and has re - erected typical dwellings in its galleries. At a state and local level many buildings have been preserved through the initiative of ad hoc bodies, sometimes with state assistance but usually on private funds. Some organisations as Old Sturbridge Village and the Shelburne Museum have established considerable collections of vernacular buildings. But it is being realised that as redevelopment proceeds ever faster the recording of vernacular buildings which it may not be feasible to preserve, is being undertaken and the work of the University of Syracuse prov1des an example.l.
