In general, the sound is somewhat muffled and distant, and distractions like persistent audience coughing and throat-clearing tend to be in the foreground. There are some moments where the sound quality declines precipitously, with the music dropping to near inaudibility; the end of the first scene of the third act, in fact, simply fades away into nothingness, deleting the last few minutes of music. If the performance were consistently brilliant, it would be easier to overlook the sound, but as it is, in spite of a very fine cast, it doesn't quite gel into a coherent and fully memorable account of the opera. Edward Downes' conducting has many fine moments, but doesn't give the opera a compelling, dramatic shape, and the sound quality makes it difficult to comment on the finesse of the Covent Garden Orchestra's playing.
