For anyone wanting the five-act version in Italian with the score presented in its original state--that is, with none of the music that Verdi removed from the French version--this is an excellent performance. Montserrat Caballe was a well-known Elisabetta and she proves why on this recording. The long phrases of "Tu che le vanita" are beautifully projected and the following duet with Domingo brings all of the emotion of their parting to the fore. The only thing missing is her practice in the theater of holding the final high B flat forever. It may not show good taste but she always made this a special...
