The finale of the Symphony No. 6, in particular, with its dissonant, all-pianissimo 12-minute journey, was taken to represent a post-nuclear-apocalyptic landscape. Whatever the case, it's a singular challenge for a conductor, and one that Antonio Pappano, in this live performance from the Barbican Centre in London, passes with flying colors; the momentum in this strange piece does not flag for a moment. Elsewhere, Pappano is likewise very strong, and this performance bodes well for his upcoming elevation to the music directorship of the London Symphony Orchestra.
