Is it great music? By Gadfrey, yes, it is. Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 9 is great music, deep and strong and true and, above all, awestruck by vast immensity and immense humanity. Boult and the London Philharmonic, longtime friends to Vaughan Williams, recorded his Ninth six hours after the composer's death in 1958 and this disc contains that performance. It is technically virtuostic, blazingly passionate, and obviously inspired. Everest's original LP was of demonstration quality in its day and the transfer is superb: ...
