MDG's sound is extraordinary, capturing the score's enveloping warmth without sacrificing the clarity and precision of its details. The sound trumps that of ECM's version featuring the SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony led by Andrey Boreyko, which is generally very fine, but picks up some distracting ambient noise, a rare occurrence for that label, which is known for its scrupulous engineering.
