Yet other songs are jazzy or broadly funny, and this gets to Barton's emerging genius. Break her voice down into its constituent elements, and it might compare unfavorably to those of any number of other singers, but her total absorption of the texts is remarkable. It extends to a point where, to quote the country poet, "it's hard to tell the singer from the song."
