Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis e un romanzo di Ugo Foscolo, considerato il primo romanzo epistolare della letteratura italiana, nel quale sono raccolte le lettere che il protagonista, Jacopo Ortis, mando all'amico Lorenzo Alderani, che dopo il suicidio di Jacopo, le avrebbe date alla stampa corredandole di una presentazione e di una conclusione. Vagamente ispirato ad un fatto reale, e al modello letterario de I dolori del giovane Werther di Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, l'opera risente molto dell'influsso di Vittorio Alfieri, al punto da essere definito "tragedia alfieriana in prosa." La vicenda trae origine dal suicidio di Girolamo Ortis, uno studente universitario nato a Vito d'Asio (Pordenone) il 13 maggio 1773 e morto il 29 marzo 1796. Foscolo muto il nome di Girolamo in Jacopo, in onore di Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Nel paese nativo esiste tuttora la casa del giovane, ristrutturata dagli eredi a seguito del terremoto del Friuli del 6 maggio 1976. L'idea dell'opera risale al 1796 quando Foscolo, nel suo Piano di studi dove tentava di dare una sistemazione organica alla sua cultura, nominava un romanzo dal titolo "Laura, lettere" che si ispirava al suo amore per Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi. Il primo Ortis vide l'inizio della pubblicazione a Bologna nel 1798 ma venne interrotto a causa della guerra contro gli Austro-russi alla quale Foscolo partecipo. L'editore volle che l'opera venisse completata e la affido ad un certo Angelo Sassoli facendola poi pubblicare nel 1799 cambiando il titolo con "Vera storia di due amanti infelici" e modificandone alcune parti sia per farla accettare al grosso pubblico, sia per evitare il sequestro della censura. Nel 1801 Foscolo, dopo aver sconfessato l'edizione del Sassoli, riprese l'opera e la pubblico a Milano. In seguito il romanzo veniva stampato prima a Zurigo nel 1816 con l'aggiunta di una lettera polemica contro Napoleone, alcune modifiche piu che altro di forma e una interessante "Notizia bibliografica" e in seguito a Londra nel 1817. Il romanzo si ispira alla doppia delusione avuta da Foscolo nell'amore per Isabella Roncioni che gli fu impossibile sposare e per la patria, ceduta da Napoleone all'Austria in seguito al Trattato di Campoformio. Il romanzo ha, quindi, chiari riferimenti autobiografici. Nella forma e nei contenuti e molto simile a I dolori del giovane Werther di Goethe (anche se a tratti richiama la Nuova Eloisa di Jean-Jacques Rousseau); per questo motivo alcuni critici hanno addirittura definito il romanzo una brutta imitazione del Werther. Tuttavia, la presenza del tema politico, assai evidente nell'Ortis e appena accennato nel Werther segna una differenza rilevante tra i due libri. Inoltre si avvertono la presenza dell'ispirazione eroica di Vittorio Alfieri e l'impegno civile e politico del poeta in quegli anni. Trama Jacopo Ortis e uno studente universitario veneto di passione repubblicana, il cui nome e nelle liste di proscrizione. Dopo aver assistito al sacrificio della sua patria si ritira, triste e inconsolabile, sui colli Euganei, dove vive in solitudine.
