There are a lot of books about child abuse that are scholarly, or from the point of view of the abused child, but there just are not that many written by Child Welfare case workers. I have been working in this field for 9 years, and when I read this book it rang true. This account captures the reality of working with abused and neglected children, the government run "system" and the psychological damage a worker endures day after day, and hour after hour. You see all kinds of stuff in the "dependency" child abuse field and it is all here. The flaws of the workers out there trying to protect children at risk is also there. This is a warts and all account, not some saccharine sweet fluff piece. But this book not only captures and depicts the work, it is told by a master story teller. This is a very fine book and I urge everyone interested in the field, or in good writing, to give it a read.
