In 2012, when Alison Balsom, Chris Botti, and a couple of other young musicians sparked renewed interest in virtuosic trumpet playing, Teldec reissued three-disc sets recorded by Sergei Nakariakov in the 1990s, before he was even 20 years old. This set is features trumpet and piano music, much of it arranged by his father or his accompanist on two of the discs, Alexander Markovich. There is a lot of familiar music here, from either the violin encore repertoire, or in the case of the disc titled "Élégie," from the vocal repertoire, but there are a few native to the trumpet. Many will be familiar with Arban's variations on The Carnival of Venice. It's pieces like that, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Waxman's Carmen Fantasy, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee that show off Nakariakov's agility. The "Élégie" disc -- made with his sister, Vera Nakariakova, as accompanist -- shows his expressive side, which given his age, is understandably not quite mature, but it is at least not hammy.
