Very Good. Vols. I-III Only (of 5). 11 folding maps, 36 tinted litho plates, xi, 635, xi, 676, xxxvi, 578p. plus [2]p. publisher's advertisements at end of Vol. III. Green cloth. Vols. I and III have new endpapers and have been rebacked, with almost all of the original backstrips mounted. 23cm. Ex church library with oval red stamp of upstate New York church on each title-page and a few other library markings including evidence of removal of a small label toward base of backstrips, above which "Ta." has been imprinted in gilt on each backstrip. Contents have a little age-toning around edges but are otherwise quite sound and clean. An important account of African exploration and discovery. While the three volume Harper edition of 1857-1859 is often described as the first American edition, we believe that this much scarcer and far more appealing Appleton edition is the true first American edition. This Appleton edition mimics the London edition of 1857-1858 except that the title-page in these volumes lists Appleton as the publisher and New York as the place of publication. A small diamond-shaped sticker ("Bound by Westleys & Co London") preserved and mounted in a corner of the new rear endpaper indicates that these volumes were originally bound in England.

Longman, Brown, Green, Longman's & Roberts, London, 1857, 1858, Volumes 1-3 are second editions, 4 &5 apparently firsts. 8vos., (xxxvi, 578), (xi, 676), (xi, 635), (xiv, 641), (xi, 695, 1)pp. illustrated with yellow-toned lithograph plates, & many woodcuts. 15 folding maps called for, 11 present, 2 of those badly damaged, to of the rest have taped tears. 60 plates called for, 55 present. Old ex-lib. set, stamps, rebound in 3 different bindings, & then heavily used again, bindings from poor to good, 1 volume split into 2 parts, volume 1 badly cracked in 3 places in text, so areading set, maps on delicate tissue, so very apt to tear. $

Good. No Jacket. Mixed editions, with the first three volumes being second editions published in 1857, and the last two being first editions published in 1858. Collated and complete with all color plates and folding maps. Some older moisture stains on edges affecting some plates. Leaves of volumes I, III, and V remain unopened. Hinges of all volumes have been professionally reinforced. Occasional small tears and other stains. Maps are all in very good condition. Overall tight and fairly clean copies. Five volume set will require additional postage charges for priority and/or international mail.
