This recording of the Op. 1 Trio Sonatas of Vitali is an uncharacteristically bland addition to the usually sparkling and energetic early music recordings produced on the Naxos label. The Op. 1 Sonatas are indeed church sonatas and, as such, are recorded here in a church. However, the recorded sound is simply too reverberant. In order to maintain any semblance of articulation, everything must be performed quite slowly. The Prestos and Prestissimos are very laid-back and unexciting. There are also some peculiar balance problems on the album with the lower register of the cello and the organ (on tracks featuring this instrument) being excessively dominating. An unidentifiable buzzing sound occurs intermittently and seems to be emanating from the cello. Intonation is generally solid, but doesn't come close to making up for the lack of energy, stylized ornamentation, or variations in tone color. Sadly, this recording is probably best suited for background music. ~ Mike D. Brownell, Rovi
