Edvard Grieg's violin sonatas have mounted something of a comeback against those overbearing souls who find them insufficiently serious, with a 1997 Naxos release featuring violinist Henning Kraggerud often serving as a standard. The year 2020 has brought two new recordings, both by women, one by Eldbjørg Hemsing and the present release by violinist Elena Urioste and pianist Tom Poster. The two versions are quite distinct in mood, and this fact alone testifies to the continuing interest of these works. The Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45, is the only one of these works played with any frequency, but Urioste and Poster take the trio as a set and make a strong case for the first two. In their own words, they find "childlike wonder" in these sonatas, and their readings are graceful, gentle, and not without humor. The low-key tone is impressively sustained throughout, and there are two entr'actes that are beautifully chosen for the occasion: spring-related transcriptions of a song and a solo piano...
