Produced by the German Cuba Chevere record label, a company dedicated to both recording and booking Cuba's hottest timba/salsa acts, Bakuleye's second release, Timbanton has the same strengths and weaknesses as many of their Cuban timba counterparts. Where musical invention and creativity flows like water, recording dollars tend to more closely resemble molasses. Bakuleye (which means a cane used to awaken the Orishas in the Yoruban language and religion) and their musical director Pedro Pablo Perez Vagas have a bright, exuberant sound and a huge group, both prerequisites for Cuban dance band success. In addition to those qualities, they also have the guts to break a lot of timba rules, incorporating merengue, cumbia and reggaeton rhythms. The listening experience is unfortunately limited. The sound is strangely sharp and compressed, or boxy. Though the performances are fantastic throughout, and the songwriting is consistent with the quality it takes to be noticed on Havana's hoppin' timba scene, the disc doesn't capture any of that raw energy. The cliché on the timba scene has become "to really get the full impact, you've got to see them live." That phrase speaks to two things; this band is so well rehearsed that they are ridiculously energetic and tight, and their small label production budget can't keep up.
