The author, Rich Osborn, wrote the book relative to his own experiences of travel and fictionalized the book. He attended college out of high school but the Vietnam war caused him to leave after his sophomore year. He became an airline pilot, married, and they raised three children. After he retired from flying he returned to college, started all over receiving a cum laude degree in creative writing from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lives with his wife Tish in Edina, Minnesota.
