This is the third of four Gunner Asch novels (The Revolt of Gunner Asch and Forward, Gunner Asch preceded this one) and the bleakest to this point. It chronicles the last few days of combat and World War II in a German artillery unit and the beginning of the American occupation. Lieutenant Asch and Major Hinrichsen pursue a Colonel who deserted his men by using their last manoeuvre to free himself and protect his loot. It's a bleak return to civilian life.
Kirst wrote a sequel many years later called "What Became of Gunner Asch."
