(Lowenstein lists 1850 as the date of the first American edition. ) Originally published in London in 1849. Alexis Soyer (1809-1858) has been variously described as flamboyant, inventive, entrepreneurial, philanthropic, adventurous, charismatic, enigmatic, a social climber, a creative genius and "the first celebrity chef." His published works are as wide-ranging as his life and career, reflecting both his considerable talent and his great humanity. Soyer's humanitarian side became evident when he went to Ireland during the 1847 potato famine and organized Dublin soup kitchens for the poor. Two years later in 1849, he published The Modern Housewife, a family cookbook for the middle classes. It witnessed numerous editions on both sidees of the Atlantic.
