If you have an interest in the medieval play cycles and the medieval stage, this is the book to have! This is the most extensive and complete work I have ever seen on the subject. Good old-fashioned scholarship that whets the appetite for more. Be prepared to spend considerable time carefully reading what Chambers has written because he leaves very few stones unturned.. Also, it wouldn't hurt to have some knowledge of Latin as Chambers quotes extensively in his footnotes from Latin sources but does not translate the quotations into English. This, however, does not impede one from understanding what Chambers has written nor does it decrease the interest in this book.

The Standard Text
This is the standard text in the field. Anyone studying the subject will want to have this book available. Some words of warning though: Chambers loved his footnotes, his Latin, and his Greek. Be prepared for a serious work that references twenty-five centuries of material, usually without translation. Aside from being a bit pedantic, this is readable and informative. It is an example of a type of scholarship and documentation that is no longer taught or practiced.
