As with most of their other books, Connie and Bud are off on another adventure. This time, however, not by foot, canoe, or sled dog. This time Bud learns to fly and on his way to become an Alaskan Bush Pilot. The book retraces many of the previous places they have visited in books past. Bud and Connie are confronted with numerous critical decisions regarding where and how to land their plane, the "Artic Tern". Bud's extensive knowledge of winter conditions, ice, snow, weather, and terrain all come to play. Hooking up as pilot with another explorer, and without Connie, Bud is missing and an air search is on. As usual, the ever creative Bud wanders back into camp after four days wearing a freshly killed moose skin as protective clothing. He sticks his head into Connies tent and asks "what's to eat?" Pure Bud and Connie exploits.
This is also the first book, to my knowledge, that infers they are becoming successful as writers of Alaskan adventures. Mentions of lecture circuits, meetings with publishers seem to indicate their life is moving along quite nicely.
If you have ever wondered what being a Bush Pilot was like in the early days of Alaska, this is the book for you. Along with the Helmerick's philosophy and relationships with Alaska natives, food, shelter, and all the other elements of staying alive in the last frontier -- this is a great read! The last page also has a surprise ending when Connie announces something pretty impotant to Bud.
