I read this book several months after finishing The Summer Country so that books was not fresh in my mind. While I enjoyed this story and would recommend it, it should be read soon after The Summer Country. I really don't feel that this one is a good stand-alone book. It was written with the assumption that you already know the characters and their back stories and motivations. Here Maureen is even more obnixious, but fortunately, the other charcters and the flow of the story makes up for her. Actually most of the women in both books are very flawed, weak or downright evil. But, I was able to overlook this and enjoy the story. I just hope Mr. Hetley learns to give a more honest, balanced view of women in the future.
