However, I definitely need a refresher. Watts' conversational and down-to-earth manner makes the somewhat dense material almost easy to navigate. His object is clearly not to intimidate but to cast a friendly light on the ancient wisdom of the texts he tackles. That said, he is quite effective in his task. His manner is not professorial, no is it (as he himself says) liturgical. He sees himself rather as a physician of sorts and taken thus one is greeted warmly and guided in a friendly manner. I cannot overstate my recommendation for this and nearly all of Watt's books.
