On this 2021 Signum Classics release by the Choir of St. John's College, the titular (and graphics-central) concept of the tree is made to serve no fewer than three different purposes. First, the image of the tree is biblical, referencing the Book of Job. Second, the album expands like a growing plant from the opening monophonic chant of Hildegard of Bingen to a final number with a choir of 500. Lastly, reference is made to regrowth after the hoped-for end of the coronavirus pandemic. Truth to tell, these concepts work only intermittently. It's no wonder, for the album is an anthology, mostly composed of recordings dating back to 2011. The 500-voice new work, led by former choir director Christopher Robinson, is impressively cleanly executed, but most of the material is from the English 19th and early 20th century core of the choir's repertory.
