This concert and album, which initiated the Three Tenors phenomenon, had the original purpose of raising funds for the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation and boosting the career of Carreras, who had only recently recovered from the disease. Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and Carreras take turns singing opera arias, Broadway hits, and traditional Neapolitan songs, but on several tracks, the three tenors sing together.
