Two thumbs up! If I had three arms, it would be 3.
Well, what can I say? This one's good y'all. Like, really good.
First off, The writing is solid. In fact, this was one where I barely noticed I was actually reading because I was just 'in' the story.
There were deliciously detailed accounts of the lives of the characters as well as the battle scenarios without becoming boring or losing the human element. And the violence isn't glorified here, which was a relief. It is pretty gritty and doesn't shy away from some of the more disturbing aspects of war. Light-hearted it is not, though it was pretty humorous in places. Some readers might find the pacing a little slow towards the middle, but I like to linger over good books and didn't find it much of a distraction.
Secondly, there's great world building. You really get a sense that this could be a real, viable society. The different races have different customs and different ways of operating; differing motives. No flimsy caricatures here. And while the scope for this novel is fairly narrowly placed in a single country, you still have a sense of a larger world that it all fits into.
Thirdly, the characters are pretty awesome. They're all well developed and three-dimensional; even the side characters are solid.
There are two main narrators,Winter Ihernglass and Captain Marcus d'Ivoire, both of whom are fully fleshed out with their own voices and motivations, faults, etc. Which brings me to the third character I want to mention, Colonel Janus bet Vhalnich. Where the two narrators are pretty down-to-earth and sometimes doubtful of their abilities the Colonel is rather the opposite. He is portrayed as very confident and rather morally ambiguous. He is the driving force behind the events of the novel, yet we hardly find anything out about him, or where his loyalties really lie. Far from being a bad thing, he is probably my favorite aspect of this book and the reason I tacked on an extra 1/2 star. I personally hope he doesn't turn out to be evil. Seriously, why do the intriguing, intelligent, scheming, and less emotionally expressive characters turn out to be evil so often? (Personal frustration, sorry 'bout that) Guess we'll just have to see.
Lastly, it's well researched. I haven't had any exposure to the ways a colonial era army would go about fighting and the descriptions made me curious, so I looked it up. Turns out Mr. Wexler stays right on target in this regard. It was my first clue that maybe I had something special here; and I was right. If you make me learn something, I'll love you forever. Just kidding. . . mostly. ^_^
Anyhow, good character development, a good story line, and a tantalizing setup for the next novel in the series. Definitely recommended. In fact the second one is coming out soon. Go read that one too after you finish this one.
