Playwright/novelist/screenwriter Goldman analyzes Broadway from the perspective of the audiences, playwrights, critics, producers and actors. Very nearly perfect... It is a loose-limbed, gossipy, insider, savvy, nuts-and-bolts report on the annual search for the winning numbers that is now big-time American commercial theatre. -Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times

It IS What It Is
In one of her books about Venice, Donna Leon defines a wonderful Italian word -'dietrologia' - that expresses a somewhat paranoid, and darkly complex, but almost universal belief: Behind what THEY're TELLING US is going on... something ELSE, and it's NOT VERY NICE, is REALLY going on.
Over the centuries, many, many 'dietrologia' books were written, on many, many topics, telling us what's REALLY happening in politics, history, religion, economics, sports and...especially...Show Business. William Goldman's 'The Season' is one of those books.
Its 'dietrologia' topic is the Broadway stage. It focuses specifically on the 1967/1968 season. And it tells us exactly what IS going on 'behind the curtain', literally, as well as metaphorically.
How well does it do that?
To put it simply: It's the best 'dietrologia' about Broadway ever written. If you care anything about American theatre, you need to personally own - not just read - a copy.
For I must make a personal confession here: I bought mine in 1970 (it fell apart from overuse, which is why I just bought another one) and one of my great remaining delights is quoting passages from 'The Season' and watching people's mouths slowly open wide...to say No! or Ohmigod!
