Seller's Description:
New. David Jasper's desert book begins once with journal entries made somewhere in the south of Texas and the Dakota Badlands, then again with a portion from Wordsworth's Prelude describing a dream of a desert. It begins again with Moses and Jesus in the desert, then with St. Anthony and friends, then Yeats's ''Second Coming'' and Saint-Exupéry's Little Prince. Again it begins (so to speak) with the paintings of Georgia O'Keefe and the film Paris, Texas, only to end with a final beginning extracted from the works of theologians and philosophers. Jasper admits the book's repetitious, and intentionally so. In the introduction, David Klemm calls it ''post-postmodern'' because ''it enacts postmodern theory and methoda[It] participates in a new form of religious reflection that is both intertextual and interdisciplinary. '' Beginning with the Bible, Jasper puts forth places, people and works of art as examples of ''real deserts'' (outside, but also inside, the imagination) we enter into. Places and texts of meeting in which we come to know more, or simply recognize the ''less'' we know, of God. In his postscript chapter, Jasper even personifies recent wars in Iraq to carry the metaphor into current events. His collage concludes with a discussion of Eliot's Four Quartets, epitomizing the desert as (in Eliot's words) ''the intersection of the timeless moment'' through which ''What we call the beginning is often the end / and to make an end is to make a beginning. '' In Jasper's words, ''a landscape that both kills and redeems. ''
