One man's experience in the Army - in this case, the German Wehrmacht during WWII. Gunner Asch revolts when a friend is mistreated and driven to the brink of suicide. Hopefully, there are some like Gunner in every army. Though armies have always been necessary, they contain far too many idiots. Gunner Asch is not an automaton.
This book has been compared to Catch-22. That novel is more comic and fantastic. The Revolt of Gunner Asch, while cynical and realistic, is hardly comic.
