Octavo. Original dark brown ribbed cloth decorated in blind, spine gilt lettered. Cream endpapers. pp (2), (viii), (9)-330, (6, ads), [2]. Book leaned; shallow (1/16 inch) chip across foot of spine, shelf rubbing to lower edges; lacking the front free endpaper; usual foxing to text; bit of rubbing to spine imprint; else a good tight copy. The UK first edition was also published in 1857, in a two volume format. There was also a simultaneous paperbound issue of this US first edition. The UK edition was published 6 June, and the US edition was published 27 June. Smith p. 172. While THE PROFESSOR was the first novel she wrote, it was her last to be published, and it was published posthumously.
