Very Good. 16mo. in full original calf, hubbed spine with gilt lettered label and fleurons in compartments. xvi (advertisment, biographical essay and contents) + 319 pp. Generally very good, boards somewhat bowed and dulled, small chips to the spine. The title page has a narrow cut beneath "Political Works" from excision of the last name of a previous owner ("Wm" still appears to the left). Interior embrowned here and there and with a bit of scattered foxing. Andrew Fletcher (1655-1716) was a Scottish politician and writer known for his oppostion to the combination under the same monarchy of England and Scotland. He was exiled for fostering insurrection in 1683 but later returned to seve in the Scottish parliament during the reign of Quuen Anne. This volume contains seven pieces: " A Discourse of government with relation to militias", " Concerning the affairs of Scotland written in the year 1698", "converning the affairs of Spain, written in the month of July 1698", "A speech upon the state of the nation in April 1701", "Sppeched by a member of Parliament which began at Edinburgh the 6th of May, 1703", and "An account of a conversationconcerning a right regulation of governments for the common good of mankind..."
