First edition, second state, with 'there' instead of 'their' to the final word of line 20 page 17 Volume II, and a semicolon after 'Co' to the publisher's information to the title page of Volume I. Complete in three volumes. Half-title is present to each volume. 'The Pirate' is a historical novel by Walter Scott, set in Shetland around 1700. This novel is roughly based on the life of the notorious pirate John Gow. The novel was received with a wide variety of opinions, with some critics thinking it was the best of the Waverley novels, and some saying it was the worse. Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'. Bookplate of D. B. Anderson to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I. Â 'D. Humphrey's Circulating Library' label to the front paste downs. In a half calf institutional binding with paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. The front board of Volume I is detached but present. Bumping to the head and tail of the spines, heavier bumping to the extremities. Large vertical crack to the spine of Volume I. Evidence of labels being formerly adhered to the front boards, with a little loss of paper from where they have been removed. Front hinge of Volume III is starting but firm. Institutional label to the front paste downs. Bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I. Volume II is lacking the front endpaper. Internally, Volumes II and III are firmly bound, binding of Volume I is tender. Pages are a little age-toned with some scattered spots. Gathering N of Volume I is working loose. Good Only.
