I actually read #3 and #4 first and could not wait to get The Pawn and The Rook. These are quite intense books and at first shocked me as to how detailed and gruesome they sometimes could be (especially #3). However, they are addictive and I can't wait for The Queen to come out! If you can get past the shock value at first, you will enjoy these thrillers.

Review of The Pawn by Steven James
Patrick Bowers is an FBI agent in the new field of environmental criminology who finds himself tracking a serial killer in the mountains of North Carolina. A good plot with many twists and turns.
The book begins with a spin tingling teen suicide scene. this is not a book for the squeamish. But for those who can accept the gore knowing that is the reality in this world, what follows is a thriller that propels the reader to turn the page.
Most of the book is set in or near Asheville, North Carolina which made it very interesting to me since I live near that area. Scene descriptions are well portrayed.
Characters are well-developed and interesting and all with unique qualities. The flashback scenes are good as well. I especially liked the eye-witness account of the one who escaped from Jonestown.
There is a little romance, a little spiritual frustration, and much intrigue.
Conspiracy and cults play a large part in this novel. I learned much about the history of such things as I read this novel. One characteristic of a good suspense is that it sends me off to do a google search to determine if what I am reading is based on fact.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading The Rook and the The Knight. I recommend it for others who enjoy suspense, thrillers, and edgy fiction.

Good Book
This book will definitely have you up all night, a good page turner with twist and turns you don't expect. I ordered the sister book The Rook, at the same time they were both good choices.

Just finished the book. I read the PAWN because it was suggested as a Christian suspense novel. Suspense? yes. Violent? yes. Readable story? yes. Christian? no. Nothing in the entire book to even suggest it is a Christian novel. If you like bloody, violent stories that will hold your attention, this is one; also, it is clean -- no bad language and no obligatory sex.
