In this provocative book Jan Bonda scrutinizes church tradition and Scripture -- especially Paul's letter to the Romans -- and concludes that neither Paul nor the prophets to whom he appeals show any trace of supporting the doctrine of eternal damnation. On the contrary, they tell us that God wants to save all people and that he will not rest until that goal has been achieved.

After decades of pastoral ministry in the Dutch Reformed Church, Rev. Bonda used his retirement to re-examine a doctrine the Reformed tradition has always held: that the unrepentant will spend the afterlife in everlasting conscious torment. The conclusions of his study are at odds with the tradition.
This book is a very worthy addition to Christian Universalist literature, adding deeper understanding of the Biblical support for universal reconciliation. Much of the central portion of the book is a detailed exegetical analysis of Paul's epistle to the Romans, placing all steps in Paul's argument in proper relation to all the other parts. I came away with a much better grasp of the flow of Paul's thought, and a firmer conviction in The One Purpose of God.
The book is well thought out, well written, and well translated. If you are struggling with the traditional doctrine of eternal hell, this volume will launch you toward a new appreciation of the unlimited love of God.
