I couldn?t put this book down. This book transported me to the peasant world of a little duchy in southern Germany; a world of secret poisoning, accusations, gossip, suspicion, backbiting, arrests, interrogations, and murder. The story line was riveting. What kept me reading was the incredible depth of research behind the story and the gripping writing that carefully unraveled the plot. Robisheaux skillfully introduces every person who wanders into the story with an impressive amount of historical detail backed by solid historical research. This was not an in-depth study of witchcraft, it was more a story of how those in power responded to an accusation against a woman believed to be in liege with Satan, while trying to follow the rules of evidence, and interrogation. The book included not just wonderful insights into the many levels of social strata, but also into the inner workings of the German legal system of the time.
I am a glutton for punishment who reads German social history regularly as my choice of free reading. Robisheaux has written one of the best social histories in recent years.
