To begin with, I am not competent to evaluate the accuracy of this translation. I apologize, because I think that this is of great importance in reviewing any translation.
Arberry's English is very clear - good standard English, not translatorspeak. Given his academic qualifications, I have no reason to suspect that he's not accurate, despite what I said above. I have looked into other translations, I recommend this one, with one reservation and one recommendation. I think that the Koran is not a book that one simply picks up and reads without guidance. One has to have help in learning /how/ to read it. In the absence of a serious, learned, and committed Muslim in this endeavor, at the very least a good introduction and a good commentary are really required. I would urge the reader to look into Carla Powers's book about one person's study of the Koran, "If The Oceans Were Ink" to get a feeling for this.
Given all this, I have no hesitation in recommending Arberry's translation.
