The Black Eagle Jazz Band had already been together for 19 years when they recorded this pair of 1990 concerts. Their stable personnel through the years gave them an opportunity to develop their own group sound. Led by the primitive cornet of Tony Pringle (whose role models include Bunk Johnson and Kid Thomas Valentine), the rest of the group is actually fairly sophisticated in the realm of New Orleans jazz, with Billy Novick being a fluent clarinetist and Bob Pilsbury a fine stride pianist. They jam a dozen songs on the 73-minute program including a few old favorites ("When You and I Were Young Maggie," "High Society," and Jelly Roll Morton's "Seattle Hunch") plus some obscurities including "Sweet Fields," Fats Waller's "Long, Deep and Wide," and Paul Barbarin's "We'll Meet Again." A fine effort easily recommended to the group's fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
